Lincoln's Birthplace, KY April, 2003
The small one-room log cabin (dirt floor, one door, one window, mud-caulked chimney) is inside the stone building. Each step of the staircase represents one year of Abraham Lincoln's life.
Paul took this picture as I came down the steps looking toward a sinkhole. The Lincoln family could get their water from a spring that still flows inside the sinkhole. Undoubtedly, they worked their way down and carried their water back up on a winding footpath; for the hill is quite steep.
At the level of the cabin, the land is more flat and somewhat more suitable for agriculture.
