Instructor Linda Cox quiets an attacker at Latham, June 2004. She is a member of the United States Aikido Federation, 14 yrs
Aikido is a fascinating martial art which relies upon a combination of timing, balance, entering, and turning movements and atemi (strikes) to redirect aggressive attacks into a circular or spiral path. The aggressor is brought under control, and the attack is neutralized. Aikido techniques generally end in a throw, joint lock or pin. For this reason, Aikido is popular with police because it can be used to control an aggressor without brutality. Aikido practice also helps to develop strength, coordination, and flexibility -- as well as a calm and focused mind.
