Petrified Forest, AZ. April, 2001
Some petrified tree logs are shown in following photos, but this first
view (which actually was near the end of the tour) shows the overall
desert-like nature of the area.
All the wood has been replaced by minerals, often preserving the form
of rings, bark, etc. The results can be quite striking.
We bought an audio cassette "tour" of the parks and stopped frequently to listen to the
explanations of what we were seeing. Well worth it.
I think of this scene as though someone with a modern chainsaw had left these cut logs and chunks of wood behind. Some of the trees had hollows in their center.
What is he pointing at? :
Petrified logs lying on the ground didn't get there other than by forces of nature which created them and eventually put them where we found them. I am pointing to one or two strata within that hill from which we could see rows of petrified logs actually protruding from the cliff-side.
At one time, of course, those strata covered where I am standing, and erosion has cut them back and will continue to do so. The very hard mineralized logs resisted the erosion and fell in place, probably breaking off at times (due to their own weight) as they protuded. If you look carefully, you can see dark logs scattered along the base of the cliff.

Here is another way in which the petrified logs eroded from the rock. They are not sticking out from the steep sides of the hill, but rather they are being uncovered in place and rolling downward when the hill underneath gradually erodes away.

The logs that are still on top of this hill are really large; for they are farther away than appears to be the case in this photograph.

I think that all or most of the logs that I saw in this particular location came from that stratum on the top of the hill.
