TOM MIX's HORSE
TOM MIX's HORSE was a complete surprise to us as Jean and I drove north of Tucson on what seemed to be a long back road in the middle of nowhere on a very hot day in April 1974. We pulled into the turn-off out of curiosity at the odd sight of this riderless horse.

Tom Mix was an authentic cowboy and movie star for my parents' generation, and we thought that this memorial to him was touching.

It is one of the memories of this trip that are quite permanent.

Unfortunately, the memorial itself was not as permanent; for I read a number of years ago that somebody had stolen this horse and that it has never been recovered.

Later this day, we visited La Casa Grande where the intense sunlight put our Polaroid camera into cardiac arrest for hours. The automobile in the background was my Uncle Earl's Dodge Colt which I drove to New York State the following year and in which Paul learned some of his (future) driving skills.
