CRATERS OF THE MOON, Idaho July 2004 One of the many cinder cones in a large area filled by all kinds of volcanic eruptive material and rifts and lavas, mostly basalts. The "hotspot" that now pushes up Yellowstone (and which has exploded enormously about 4 times in the past) had previously passed under this spot. Fortunately, this was no longer glowing red hot when we explored it.
There is a unworldly view (actually a really worldly view that we don't often see) from the top of this pile of cinders. I climbed it in 2000 or 2001.
